Latest Atlas E-Discovery and Compliance Solutions from PSS Systems Enhance the Automated Distribution of Retention Schedules, Legal Holds and Collection Requests
Version 2.4 of the Atlas Suite Automates More Aspects of Retention and Legal Holds Issues Related to the Revised 2006 Federal Rules of Civil Procedure

Mountain View, California, May 16, 2007— PSS Systems, the market leader in legal holds and retention management software, has announced a new edition of its industry-leading Atlas suite, including enhancements to Atlas ERM™ for enterprise retention management and Atlas LCC™ for legal holds and collections management. Atlas 2.4 provides an improved mechanism to automatically distribute retention schedules, legal hold orders and collection requests across the enterprise.

The Atlas suite has been in production use for two-and-a-half years by top-five industry leaders in financial services, insurance, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals and telecommunications. Atlas handles tens of thousands of legal holds and collections and nearly a hundred thousand retention schedules for fifteen thousand business and legal users worldwide. The latest Atlas release adds to PSS’s significant lead with more highly relevant and powerful features to help corporations reduce the risks and costs arising from legal obligations. The Atlas suite saves companies millions of dollars in legal and IT costs by enabling them to modernize and synchronize their retention and preservation efforts. Atlas 2.4 delivers increased value and enhanced functionality in a number of ways:

  • New AtlasLink framework and AtlasLink connectors automate distribution of retention schedules, legal holds, and collection requests to the systems that have information as well as seamlessly connecting Atlas to other applications that contain information relevant to the legal holds and retention processes, including matter management systems, HR systems and others.
  • Atlas ERM now has significant enhancements to retention policy communications and enables program coordinators to easily send program bulletins targeting recipients by role, country, business group, and so on.
  • Atlas LCC was enhanced with more dynamic and detailed queries for monitoring compliance with holds, managing overlapping holds and preparing for “meet and confer” discussions with reports on all custodians and data sources within the scope of a matter.
  • The Atlas Map was enhanced so that custodial systems and data sources could be described by additional attributes such as fixed costs associated with discovery, discovery liaison and IT expert, level of accessibility and other data characteristics. These systems and data sources can be easily tapped as records repositories in Atlas ERM and as sources of potentially relevant information in litigation in Atlas LCC.

The new Federal Rules of Civil Procedure increase the pressure on companies to ensure that their preservation and litigation processes consider all data sources and incents them to modernize their retention programs to address information across the enterprise with more predictability, control, and transparency. The sheer number of data stores and disparity of data types in which material business information exists – such as content management systems, structured transaction applications, databases, email servers and physical document stores -- make it virtually impossible for companies to manage retention and legal holds programs individually in each of these systems.

“This rapid growth in the volume of electronic information has exposed the limitations of traditional retention and legal holds programs that were designed for paper records,” explained Deidre Paknad, CEO of PSS Systems. “With the Atlas suite, companies can readily comply with their litigation obligations and modernize their retention program to address the information their business truly generates; with the AtlasLink connectors, they can automate the distribution of holds and retention schedules to those systems to regain control over a complex information environment and reduce cost and risk.”

The need to quickly identify and disclose all relevant data sources early in the course of litigation requires companies to harmonize their data storage, retention practices, and litigation efforts. “Retention and preservation must be well synchronized to cost effectively comply with new obligations under the Federal Rules,” Paknad added. “Yet litigation and retention teams each require highly relevant, easy-to-use systems that are tailored to their respective day-to-day processes. Atlas 2.4 puts even more tools and transparency in their hands.”

About PSS Systems
PSS Systems is the leading provider of legal holds and retention management software. The company’s Atlas software suite, launched in Spring 2005, enables enterprises to synchronize retention, disposal, preservation and production to reduce cost and risk.

The Atlas LCC module addresses the challenges of legal holds and collections for corporate litigation departments. The Atlas ERM module helps companies modernize their retention practices to address electronic data and disparate data repositories across the enterprise. Both modules use the Atlas map of the enterprise, its business units and employees, data sources and systems, and the laws that impact various jurisdictions. The combined components of the Atlas suite serve as a policy hub or “golden source” on what information companies must retain and preserve. By federating retention and hold rules to data systems and the people who manage them, companies can rationally and legally dispose of unneeded data to reduce costs and risks.

Atlas users include Citigroup, Credit Suisse, First Data Corporation, and other Global 500 market leaders in the financial services, insurance, oil and gas, pharmaceutical and telecommunications industries. Atlas is used by many thousands of people in more than 150 countries around the world.

PSS Systems is a recognized leader on retention and preservation topics. It founded and sponsors the CGOC, an executive forum and professional community on practice issues related to retention and preservation, started in January 2004. PSS Systems is privately held and is based in Mountain View, California. For more information, visit http://www.pss-systems.com.
